The novel opens with a powerful discussion of the power of words and language.  How does this author's choice help capture the reader's attention?

  1. Sharon Draper helps capture the reader’s attention because you see how important it is for the character Melody, so you put yourself in her shoes. You would want to know what the story is going to be about. Also it tells us what she does and how she does it. Melody can't communicate with other people easily. I like that she expresses herself in her own way. It would be so hard to deal with cerebral palsy.

  2. Sharon Draper catches reader’s attention because when she was talking about words and language, it made me think hard. So, the author caught my attention. The author made me think hard about how you can express the things that you want say. You stop and think about how you know what words mean and how you know to how speak them.

  3. The author’s choice helped get my attention because she had the main character, Melody, telling the story. The 10 year old girl, Melody was describing how it felt, and she was also saying things about herself that other people said about her. That got my attention!!! This book really caught my attention because Melody is really brave. She is a really smart kid. I wanted to read more to find out how it felt to not be able to communicate.I can’t wait to read the next chapter it’s a really good book and what really caught my attention was that Melody is describing how she really feels and that words are more than just blah-blah, It means more to her.

  4. Sharon M. Draper is a great author. She puts in these powerful words in the novel that provide a better understanding of what people like Melody feel about their condition. It captures my attention because of how she uses similes and metaphors to describe words.

  5. When she described the power of words, it made it interesting making you want to read on. The way Sharon Draper put the words with a nice description made it a nice calm book instead of a lot of talking it was calm. Knowing it makes it seem like there’s more meaning. It makes you think “What will happen next?” or “What will happen next!”. Its nice to see how others unlike us see the world.

  6. The author got my attention because she was telling us what words really are and that we haven't noticed what they mean to others. She tried to tell the reader what she thinks about the character, Melody, and what other people think about her. Like she's a little dark haired girl in a wheelchair and she thinks of her as an intelligent and smart but cannot express what wants to say. It captures my attention because the author has a great way of explaining how Melody feels about words.

  7. The author’s choice captures my attention because she wants to express Melody’s feelings about how she feels about words and language. Not many people, probably know how she feels. The author’s description of words and language to Melody make me want to read more to see if she will ever be able to use those words.

  14. It captures my attention because the author is describing what someone with cerebral palsy would be thinking. The power of words are what people are saying to others. She chose to do this to show how people are communicating if they cannot talk. The book is interesting because the author made it easy to visualize what is happening in the story. The words at the beginning are to understanding the beginning better about what she thinks about words.

  16. The author made me want to read more by helping to take me into Melody’s mind because she can’t talk. It makes me realize how my life is amazing. The author’s choice helped capture the reader’s attention by saying things in 1st person and in 2nd person. Also, by using similes and metaphors. She used made up words like “play pretty” and expressed her feelings through the character, Melody.

  32. The author captures my attention by saying that the person can’t talk and that makes the readers want to know more about how the character isn’t able to talk. So they read more to find out why it intrigues them so much. That is how the author’s powerful discussion of words captures the reader’s attention.

  33. The author in the book out of my mind the author uses similes, metaphors, and bold words to make us keep on reading their book.A little girl with cerebral palsy, who would not want to read that. With no function just a mind with a million answers but can’t tell about it.

  35. How it helps capture the reader attention by making it powerful. They might know the story is going to be about words and that when they start reading it wants them to read about more. So when i read the first page i wanted to read more because i wanted to know who the person was and what's going to happen next.

  38. I think the authors choice of words captured the readers attention. She used really descriptive words and told about what melody was thinking but not just normally she used words to describe her feelings. she made the thoughts in melody's head more fun .The part where she said words have always swirled around me like snow flakes was entertaining and help you know more about melody . when the author used the words Mississippi and hippopotamus are great words she added because she used words that are fun for kids to say the author used great words and really captured my attention .

  43. It helps catch the readers attention because of the words in the story are powerful. So for example if a reader reads the story of out of my mind I think the story would catch their attention. By how it starts off not telling who the person is but all they start with is things about the person.

  44. I think the author gives Melody words that they can grab you and to make you happy and it will give people a feelings and she has a brain that bigger then you think and watches TV and news .

  45. The author says Melody in different ways. The words that Melody says are powerful are words that bring attention. The words in the book "Words have always swirled around me like snowflakes."is a phrase that has power. This one has power too " Mountains of phrases and sentences and connected ideas. Clever expressions, jokes love songs."these phrases get there power from the author. The author puts Melody in a world of powerful words, phrases and sentences. It's hard for Melody with all these things she say and all these powerful words shes surrounded by, but Melody may have something to say the things she wants to say.

  54. I think Mr.Hugely is a mean doctor telling Melody and her mother that Melody's retarded. That's just harsh and I would have fired him.
