Students, we have a guest blogger that will be joining us while we blog about the book, Out of My Mind. Here is a note from her:
Hi guys!
My name is Holly Kaupa. I'm a professor of English at Grand Rapids Community College, where I've worked for the past four years. I also have cerebral palsy and use a power wheelchair, just like Melody in "Out Of My Mind."
I was born 10 weeks early and weighed just 2 pounds, 7 ounces at birth. It's important to know that cerebral palsy doesn't always impact people in the same way, so while I can't walk, I can speak pretty clearly (unlike Melody). Even so, I need help dressing, bathing, and making food to eat every day. Luckily, I have a few wonderful caregivers who come to my apartment every day to help!
In school I really struggled with certain subjects: math, science, art. But just like Melody, once I found the thing I was good at, life got a lot easier. I'm a college professor now, and sometimes people think that since I'm in a wheelchair that I must not be smart. I loved "Out Of My Mind" because Melody's message is so similar to mine: just because SOME parts of your brain struggle to function correctly doesn't mean you can't be brilliant!
Thanks for reading! Looking forward to interacting with you!
